CYGNET BAY PEARL FARM Situated on the Dampier Peninsula, a 2.5 hour drive north of Broome, Cygnet Bay Pearl farm first opened its doors to the public in 2009.  It has since evolved to incorporate various tour and accommodation options, including indigenous culture, pearling history, farm tours and sea safaris surrounding a homestead restaurant with infinity pool.
BROKEN BAY PEARL FARM Established in 2003, Broken Bay Pearl Farm is located on the Brisbane Waters near Woy Woy in the Central Coast NSW, 1 hour north of Sydney.  Through Pearls of Australia it is now open for boutique tours including seeding and harvesting demonstrations followed by pearl grading and valuing.
BROOME PEARL EXHIBITION Adjacent to the Cygnet Bay Pearls showroom in Broome, is the Broome Pearl Exhibition which tells the timeline of Australia’s pearl history from the early pioneers through to modern day cultured pearl industry.  Here guests can see demonstrations of a pearl being harvested and see presentations of the industry.
PEARLS OF AUSTRALIA SHELLER DOOR In development for opening in 2019, the Pearls of Australia ‘Sheller Door’ will be located in the Hawkesbury River incorporating on-water tours of local pearl production, harvest demonstrations and on-land pearl appreciation with jewellery boutique, incorporating both the Australian South Sea and Australian Akoya pearl.
PEARLS OF AUSTRALIA EAST TO WEST VOYAGE With the inaugural Voyage launched in 2018, the Pearls of Australia East to West Voyage is an annual strictly limited opportunity to immersive experience of the Australian Pearl starting in the pristine estuaries of the Hawkesbury region in NSW, travelling via Shinju Matsuri festival of the pearl in Broome, to Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm on the Dampier Peninsula.  Hosted by James Brown in September each year.
PEARL MEAT Pearl Meat is the abductor muscle of the Pinctada maxima oyster, a seafood delicacy with a fresh taste and tender texture. Because only small quantities of pearl meat tend to be harvested annually it is an expensive commodity, selling in Australia for at least $100 per kilogram fresh or for $400 per kilogram dried in Asia.

 

Pearls of Australia will soon develop its Akoya Pinctada fucata pearl meat offerings as a culinary delicacy.

HISTORY

The story of Cygnet Bay Pearls is a rare and fascinating tale that began three generations ago with entrepreneur and founder, Dean Brown. It was 1946 and navigating the pristine Kimberley coastline in a wooden lugger, Dean discovered the secluded unspoilt beauty of Cygnet Bay along with the precious gift of the Pinctada maxima pearl shell.

It was in these waters that his pearling dream was realised in the creation of the first Australian owned and run South Sea pearl farm. With an immense respect and connection to this sea, the Brown family are proud custodians of their grandfather’s 71-year legacy, running one of only three commercial pearl farms still operating in Western Australia.

It all began in 1946 when founder Dean Brown sailed to the Kimberley on a pearl lugger. He was later joined by his son Lyndon who unlocked the secrets of pearl culture and established Australia’s first family-owned pearl farm at Cygnet Bay in 1959.

Up until this moment it was only the Japanese that had the expertise on how to successfully culture pearls. No farm in the world had ever been started withoutJapanese involvement.

Dean and Lyndon were soon joined by Dean’s youngest son Bruce and the three of them set about forging a business out of bark huts, pindan and the azure waters of Cygnet Bay.

In the decades that followed the Browns were instrumental in developing their own business, as well as paving the way for a whole new modern Australian industry: being involved in the introduction of modern diving equipment to the hart-hat pearl diving fleet; building the industry’s first high-tech fibreglass pearling lugger; and opening Broome’s first cultured pearl shop.

After nearly half a century and the hard work and dedication of three generations at Cygnet Bay the pearling industry had reached incredible heights.

By the early 2000’s Cygnet Bay was producing one of the rarest and most valuable pearl harvests in the world, and third generation pearler James Brown took over the helm of the family business.

In 2009 Cygnet Bay Pearls opened its doors to the public, inviting them to not only discover what it takes to run a pearl farm but, in another industry first, giving people the opportunity to view and purchase pearls directly from the waters in which they were nurtured.

Today, Cygnet Bay remains the only commercial pearl farm open to the public and offers en-suite safari tent accommodation, renovated heritage-listed pearlers shacks; a licensed restaurant with sweeping verandas and an infinite edged pool overlooking the beautiful bay where this remarkable story unfolded.

In the 2004 harvest an exceptional pearl arrived – a 22.24mm with all the desired hallmarks of a ‘perfect pearl’: a pink hue and near perfect clean lustrous white skin – believed to be the largest fine quality round pearl in the world every produced.

The Brown’s tireless pearling pursuit spanning three generations is reflected in this one piece – its rarity and beauty echo the blood, sweat, tears and joy of all that played a part in the Cygnet Bay story.

The family proudly displays this priceless pearl to the public in their Chinatown showroom as a flagship piece and a reminder to all of just how far the Australian Pearling Industry has come.

Rewind to the burgeoning pearl industry on the East Coast of Australia when Broken Bay Pearl Farm in the NSW Central Coast was established in 2003 by four rock oyster licence holders who discovered native Pinctada fucata shell growing in the local waters of their oyster farms.   Between them representing  200 years of rock oyster farming experience, and intimate local knowledge of the marine environment, they created a new Akoya pearl industry to NSW.

Wanting a ‘back up’ to the vagaries of food-only oyster production Ian and Rose Crisp were the driving force of the partners and over the past 13 years. Rose become a self-taught pearl technician and the four partners farmed across the NSW coast, trialling various locations for pearl production with Broken Bay proving the ultimate success.

Broken Bay Pearls today remaining the only company in NSW producing pearls.

Over the last decade the Brown family through Cygnet Bay Pearls Pty Ltd, has been investing in a new business model for Australian pearls. This consists of a range of innovations aimed at blending experience-based educational tourism with improved products for consumers, while creating new markets for producers. To achieve this and building on 70 years of experience pioneering an industry, Cygnet Bay Pearls, led by Bruce and James Brown have expanded their pearl farming capacity to include another pearl shell species native to our waters – the Australian Akoya pearl. Their investment in Broken Bay Pearls in NSW forms part of the Pearls of Australia group.

Pearls of Australia takes pearl provenance to a new and unprecedented level. While provenance values are well recognised and leveraged by other industries such as food and wine, it is not the case with Australian pearls. In today’s market it is impossible to prove where a pearl has come from unless it comes directly from the producer.

Pearls are recognised to have 5 common virtues: shape, size, skin, colour and lustre. Source of origin and provenance are not passed on to the end consumer even though it is a highly desirable trait.

This gap in the market is central to the innovation behind Pearls of Australia which now offers 7 pearl virtues to consumer – the guarantee of provenance and purity.
