OUR VALUES

Pristine
Pearls of Australia celebrates local marine product, cultivated in unspoilt waters which have been carefully selected for its nutrient rich pristine virtues. An untouched environment for the most exquisite Australian pearls to grow.

Elegant
An exquisite wonder of the natural world, the pearl is the oldest known gem. The ancients called it the ‘teardrop of the moon’. It holds a romantic, ethereal and luminous quality. Lauded as the symbol of purity and innocence, the Pearl of Australia is a statement in style and grace.

Authentic
Transparency and honesty are key for us, we take great pride in the creation of our pearls, sharing our knowledge, showing how and where the pearls are cultivated. Our path to provenance is as pristine as the waters in which our pearls grow.

Australian
We champion Australian pearls and as such, aim to build a reputation as the authority on and in driving certification of all pearls. Our goal is to lead the industry in mandatory certification with the introduction of a traceable provenance tracking code system to identify and assure the true authenticity of every pearl.

Rare
A covetable, iridescent natural wonder, these rare and precious pearls are cultivated in controlled, pristine environments in limited quantities. The shape, size, surface quality, lustre and colour of the Pearl of Australia can never be guaranteed, no two are the same, all are beautiful.

Passionate
As the first Australian owned and run pearl farming business in Western Australia and parent company of Pearls of Australia, Cygnet Bay Pearls are true pioneers in Australian pearling. Founder, Dean Brown, braved the treacherous waters and uncharted region to establish his pearling business, now in its third generation. This pioneering spirit has transcended generations and 71 years later, the Brown family still apply the passion, knowledge and respect for the environment to each and every precious pearl that they grow.

Sustainable
Carefully cultivated in only the most pristine environments, Australian pearls must be created in an unspoilt environment. The Brown family of Cygnet Bay Pearls are extremely active in conserving their natural resource and with a degree in Marine Biology, MD, James Brown champions research and development and ensures that all pearls under his authority are grown with minimal impact to the marine environment.  The establishment of the Kimberley Marine Research Station at Cygnet Bay ensures this commitment to industry best practice.

Expertise
Extensive research and development is continuously undertaken to maintain our position as market leader in cultivating pearls. This started with Cygnet Bay Pearls’ founder unlocking of the secret of seeding a pearl shell itself that resulted in the creation of the world’s biggest pearl. This knowledge and expertise is shared throughout the business and extends from the pearling farm to the retail environment. All staff on the floor are thoroughly trained to understand and talk through the magic of cultivating pearls, making for a rewarding and immersive retail experience at Pearls of Australia.

THE 5 VIRTUES OF AN ORDINARY PEARL

1. Lustre.  Lustre is the interplay of light bouncing off a pearl’s surface (reflection) and penetrating deeper into the pearl’s structure (glow).  Lustre is the most beautiful aspect of a pearl.

2. Surface.  A pearl being made by a living mollusc, almost always has surface imperfections and/or complexion irregularities.  Surface issues manifest as littler diverts, or lumps or lines.  Complexion is more the deeper internal structure of the nacre crystals.  This often presents as either a mosaic or crazing effect below.

3. Shape.  A pearl’s shape is purely a personal preference but it does impact quite significantly on a a pearl’s value.  In essence the more symmetrical the pearl, the more valuable.

4. Size.  The world’s largest pearls are grown in Australia, in fact the largest round, fine quality pearl ever produced came from Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm in 2004 (22.24mm).  Nucleated South Sea pearls are rarely under 8mm and can grow in excess of 20mm.  The Akoya pearl ranges from 4 to 10mm, the average size from 6.5 to 8mm.

5. Colour. Colour does influence price, and like all things to do with a gem rarity and beauty will be the more valuable.  When describing colour, we often refer to a base colour and then a secondary hue.

THE SEVEN VIRTUES OF PEARLS OF AUSTRALIA

6. Provenance.  To know where your pearl was grown is to know what its true value is, and it’s only the pearl sold direct from the farm which can come with that guarantee.

7. Purity.  Pearls of Australia are as nature intended, untreated and un-enhanced, a rare gem in today’s global market
